Captain America Battles a ‘Secret Empire’ in New Epic Collection

Steve Englehart’s famous “Cap quits” storyline is the focus of the new Captain America: Secret Empire Epic Collection.

Secret Empire includes Captain America #160-179 (originally published from 1973-74 during the height of the Watergate Scandal) written by Englehart (with a fill-in issue and some assists by Roy Thomas, Tony Isabell, and Mike Friedrich) with art by Sal Buscema, Alan Weiss, Frank McLaughlin, John Verpoorten, Frank Giacoia, John Tartaglione, George Roussos, Vince Colletta, and John Romita Sr.

Englehart’s run sees Steve Rogers lose faith in the current leaders of the country, after an attempt is made to discredit and frame the star-spangled Avenger which leads to Cap stepping down (before a brief stint as Nomad, covered in a different Epic Collection).

The collection also includes some memorable team-ups with Falcon (who shared the title with Cap in this era), Black Panther, the Uncanny X-Men, and Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The forces of good have to contend with some formidable foes such as the diabolical Doctor Faustus, the Yellow Claw, Nightshade, Helmut Zemo, The Serpent Society, and many more.

The “Secret Empire” storyline has been collected previously (featuring Captain America #169-176) in 2005 and 2017.

The Epic Collection includes 416 pages for a suggested retail price of $44.99.
