While the summer box office season may be off to a slow start, the Jedi Council did everything they could to help out this weekend, adding another $8.1 million to the overall box office totals and the 1999 film’s bottom line some twenty-five years later.
The “May the Fourth” celebration played in 2,600 theaters and will continue through the rest of the week for those feeling nostalgic about the film that gave us Darth Maul, Jar Jar Binks, and pod races.
The Phantom Menace added an additional $6.4 million internationally, bringing its full weekend total to $14.5 million worldwide.
The Fall Guy finished below expectations in the top spot with an estimated $28.5 and Menace held off last week’s tennis champ Challengers which finished with $7.6 million.
If Phantom Menace continues to do well, don’t be surprised if the film gets an additional weekend to exert its force at the box office.
Classic film fans can expect more opportunities to see their favorite films on the silver screen soon, so be sure to stay tuned to Conskipper for all of your vintage screenings news.
