In its second weekend, “Marvel Jesus” surpassed The Passion of the Christ for the highest grossing R-rated film ever.
Deadpool & Wolverine collected another $97 million in its second weekend of release, bringing the film’s domestic total to $395.6 million, vaulting over The Passion of the Christ’s $370 million total.
Deadpool & Wolverine’s worldwide box office now stands at $824.1 million in ticket sales, a total that has already passed either of the first two Deadpool films. The 2016 original grossed $782.6 million worldwide and the 2018 sequel brought in $734.5 million.
Deadpool and his pal still have a long way to go to match the “adjusted for inflation” R-rated champ The Exorcist‘s gross with $1,011,798,348 in ticket sales back in 1973.
In much less profitable news, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest twist-o-rama Trap managed only $15.6 million in its opening weekend. Shyamalan’s tired formula didn’t impress critics or fans with a 50% Rotten Tomatoes number and a much worse grade of “C+” from those polled by CinemaScore.
Opening the film the week after Deadpool & Wolverine “trapped” the film from the start and with similar thrillers opening over the next few weeks (Cuckoo, Alien: Romulus, and Skincare), we can expect Trap to drop quicker than the director’s ill-fated attempt to become a corporate education reformer.
Check back next week to see how far Deadpool & Wolverine can climb up the all-time box office charts.
