Deadpool & Wolverine won the weekend box office with an estimated $205 million in ticket sales, but the two mutants also set the new record for the biggest opening ever for an R-rated film.
Deadpool & Wolverine obliterated previous record-holder Deadpool (which earned $132.4 million in 2016).
Deadpool & Wolverine also toppled Disney stablemate The Lion King (2019’s CGI “live-action” version) for the best opening ever in July.
The team-up is also the highest domestic opening weekend of 2024 and the highest since 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (which generated $260.1 million in sales) and the 8th highest opening domestic weekend of all time.
In terms of superhero action, the boys now rank #5 for the highest superhero opening weekend of all time (behind Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, and The Avengers).
With $438.3M worldwide after one weekend, the sky is the limit for Deadpool & Wolverine, especially with strong critical scores and a super positive audience response.
Deadpool & Wolverine currently sits at 79% fresh and 97% positive on the Audience Score metric at Rotten Tomatoes. The film also scored extremely well with those exiting the theaters this weekend, with CinemaScore reporting an “A” rating.
Come back next week to see how much Deadpool and Wolverine are able to generate in week 2.
