‘Planet of the Apes Adventures’ Epic Collection Revisits Marvel’s Original ‘Apes’ Adaptations

Marvel Comics continues to mine their Planet of the Apes license (and excitement over the release of the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes film) with a new way to experience their original Apes run in the Planet of the Apes Adventures Epic Collection.

The eleven issue series (originally published in 1975-76 as Adventures of the Planet of the Apes) are all represented in the Epic Collection, written by Doug Moench, with art by George Tuska, Alfredo Alcala, Mike Esposito, Tony Mortellaro, and Dave Hunt.

The comics adapt the first Planet of the Apes film and the Beneath the Planet of the Apes sequel, based on the original stories by Pierre Boulle, Paul Dehn, and Mort Abrahams, and the screenplays by Dehn, Michael Wilson, and Twilight Zone host Rod Serling.

All of the issues in the Adventures of the Planet of the Apes series from the 1970s were actually color versions of the original black and white adaptations from Marvel’s Planet of the Apes magazine done a few years earlier.

The exact same material (with the same cover by E.M. Gist) was released in 2022 in the hardcover (and much pricier) the Planet of the Apes Adventures: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus.

Marvel has yet to publish any reprints of the original, non-movie adaptation Marvel stories from the long-running Planet of the Apes magazine series.

The Epic Collection consists of 224 pages for a suggested retail price of $34.99.
