The Mystery of the Proto-Goblin Explored in ‘Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin’ Series

J.M. DeMatteis and artist Michael Sta. Maria reach back to 1997’s Spider-Man -1 to further unravel the Shadow of the Green Goblin.

The Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin four-issue mini-series will explore a plot thread from Howard Mackie, Dan Fraga, and Scott Hanna’s story concerning the original test subject of the “Goblin Formula”, Norman Osborn’s research assistant Nels van Adder, and his transformation into the Proto-Goblin.

The retro series picks up right after Spider-Man -1 at the earliest stages of Peter Parker’s masked career. DeMatteis said that he has “…always been fascinated with Peter Parker’s early days as Spider-Man, a time before he fully understood what it meant to be a super hero. Shadow of the Goblin allows us to take a deep dive into Young Peter’s mind and emotions as he makes his way through this exhilarating, and sometimes terrifying, new world.”

Norman Osbourne is also dissected in the new series, as “We take an equally-deep dive into the dysfunctional dynamic of the Osborn family, seeing how that generational pain sowed the earliest seeds of Norman’s Green Goblin identity and left its traumatic imprint on Harry. If you think you know everything there is to know about Peter and the Osborns, think again!”

Spider-Man: Shadow of the Green Goblin marks the third Spidey retro series from DeMatteis over the past few years, following Ben Reilly: Spider-Man and Kraven: The Lost Hunt.
