Mike Del Mundo Discusses His New ‘The Marvel Art of Mike del Mundo’ Book

Clover Press and Marvel are collaborating on another The Marvel Art Of… book, this time featuring the instantly recognizable art stylings of Mike del Mundo.

The Marvel Art of Mike del Mundo (currently available to back on Kickstarter) celebrates the artist’s cover and interior work, with over 200 pages of colorful, vibrant artwork, featuring everyone from The X-Men, Avengers, Deadpool, Thor, Elektra, Spider-Man and more.

The Kickstarter campaign also allows fans to get ahold of 11″ x 17″ prints, posters, stickers, a puzzle, signed books, and even original sketches, depending on the tier and availability.

We spoke to Del Mundo about his new book and some of his memories working on the Marvel pantheon in this exclusive interview.

What was your first reaction when you were contacted about doing an art book?

Mike del Mundo:I actually reached out to Hank over at Clover Press just to see if doing an artbook was even a possibility and to my surprise, he was totally in. We’ve already been working with Hank through 3W3M, so teaming up with Clover Press for this felt like a really smooth transition.

What was the process like in terms of assembling your art for the book?

del Mundo: The process has been pretty smooth and that’s thanks to the incredible team around me. Clover Press has been leading the charge and keeping everything running seamlessly. On my end, my good friends Jason Sorrenti and Garth Smith have been deeply involved, meticulously curating the book and helping shape the campaign.

We’ve spent a lot of time going through my work and deciding which pieces made the cut, which hasn’t been easy, because there’s just so much to choose from. But hey, that’s a good problem to have. I honestly wish we could include it all.

Was there one particular piece of art that you had forgotten about or that you are excited for people to see?

del Mundo: I’m excited for all of it but what I’m really looking forward to people seeing are the double-page interior spreads we’ve included, especially the ones we’re turning into fold-outs. One of the highlights is my Elektra #1 spread, where she’s performing a ribbon dance that gradually transforms into flowing blood across four pages. We’ve put those pages together so you can finally see the full sequence as one image.

Your style is instantly recognizable to fans. How would you describe your process and why it is so unique?

del Mundo: For me, it all comes down to the approach. When I create a cover, I’m not just drawing a moment, I’m trying to tell a complete story in a single image. It’s a thoughtful process built around concept and narrative. My style might evolve over time, but the ideas, the storytelling behind the image are what I believe truly stands the test of time.

Memories of working with Jason Aaron on Thor and cult favorite Weird World

del Mundo: Jason Aaron is a gift to comics, and I’m lucky to have been part of his run. Weirdworld was such a blast to work on. It was this “anything goes” kind of world where I could mash up all my favorite genres: fantasy, sci-fi, even hip-hop. I love that a place like that exists. It felt like a giant playground where I ran wild creatively.

What can you tell us about 3 Worlds 3 Moons with Jonathan Hickman & Mike Huddleston?

del Mundo: Working with Hickman and Huddleston, two powerhouses when it comes to world building, has been an incredible experience and building this universe with them has been pure joy. 3W3M explores the ongoing power struggle between magic and science, and how the balance constantly shifts over different eras. It’s a rich, ever-evolving world, and being part of shaping it has been something special.

Other upcoming work/projects? Del

del Mundo: I’m currently doing a cover run for DC’s KO event and just dropped a comic collab tied to the new Alfredo 2 album from Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist. On top of that, I’m still staying sharp with monthly cover work to keep the momentum going.
