Richard Corben’s Original ‘Heavy Metal’ Movie Painting Sells for $288,000 at Heritage Auctions

The original Richard Corben art for one of the posters from the 1981 film Heavy Metal sold for $288,000 at the most recent Heritage Auctions event.

Corben’s 35.5″ x 50.5″ painting from 1981 sold for seven times higher than Corben’s previous auction high and was the first painting to come to auction from the Richard Corben Estate since the artist’s death in 2020.

The Den image served as one of the main two theater posters for the animated feature (the other one being Chris Achilleos’ Taarna poster) which was also used as the cover image for 1987’s Den story collection by Heavy Metal magazine.

Conskipper was lucky enough to interview Corben in 2018 when he was working on his horror anthology comic for Dark Horse Comics entitled Shadows on the Grave.
