The Thing is back with a number of memorable team-ups in his latest Marvel Two-in-One Epic Collection, none more memorable than the seminal “Project PEGASUS” storyline.
Continuing directly after the Marvel Two-in-One: Remembrance of Things Past Epic Collection, Project PEGASUS collects Marvel Two-in-One #53-74, originally published from 1979-1981.
All stories are written by Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, Marv Wolfman, and Steven Grant, with art by John Byrne, George Perez, Chic Stone, Jerry Bingham, Ron Wilson, Mike Nasser, Frank Springer, Joe Sinnott, Gene Day, and Al Gordon.
Macchio detailed the origins of the Project PEGASUS in an interview with Conskipper at TerrifiCon 2024, saying, “The reason I thought about was I had been a big fan of Kirby’s DNA project in Jimmy Olsen. And I said, you know, Jack left something at DC, even if he left the company, everybody can go to Project Cadmus, which they renamed from the DNA Project.”
“Obviously, I can’t rip off the idea of genetics, but that was the time of the energy crisis in the late 1970s, so I said, how about an alternative energy place that the government sponsored and then Roxxon oil, will want to take it down because they don’t want alternative energy. And I took the name Project Pegasus because I liked the idea of motion and energy and movement and the horse Pegasus. I thought that’d be a nice insignia. Yes. So that worked out!” Macchio said.
In addition to the “Project PEGASUS” storyline (co-starring S.H.I.E.L.D., Quasar, Giant-Man, Thundra, Deathlok, Wundarr, and Aquarian), the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing also partners with Johnny Storm, Reed Richards, Moondragon, Starhawk, Adam Warlock, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Impossible Man, Hyperion, Angel, the Inhumans, and Stingray, Triton, and the Scarlet Witch for the three-part “The Serpent Crown Affair” story.
With four Epic Collections already released, one more will complete the entire Marvel-Two-in-One 100-issue series.
Marvel also released the Marvel Two-in-One Omnibus Vol. 1 in 2025 (which contains roughly one-third of the entire series).
The Marvel Two-in-One: Project PEGASUS Epic Collection consists of 448 pages for a suggested retail price of $49.99.
