DC Commemorates 40th Anniversary of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Returns’ in Multiple Formats

DC Comics commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Frank Miller and Klaus Janson’s genre-altering Batman: The Dark Knight Returns throughout 2026, starting in February with new facsimile editions of the entire series.

Each facsimile issue features exact replicas of the original 1986 single issues as they first appeared, with their original covers, ads, and features. In addition to the classic cover, the first issue will also be available in a chrome variant and a new Jim Lee variant cover.

Later this summer, DC will continue to celebrate the series with additional variant covers of The Dark Knight Returns, featuring new interpretations of the character and story by top artists.

The anniversary year continues with the release of Batman: The Dark Knight Returns: DC Compact Comics Edition on April 7 and culminating on Batman Day 2026, with the release of DC’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition hardcover, with a new cover by Miller.
