‘Alien: Romulus’ Takes Over Top Weekend Box Office Position

Deadpool & Wolverine stepped aside for their fellow Disney stablemates the Xenomorphs, allowing Alien: Romulus to take the top spot at the weekend box office.

The Fede Alvarez film came in with an estimated $41.5 million at the domestic box office and a global total of $108.2 million, the second best opening for any Alien film. The top spot still belongs to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, which tool in $51 million back in 2012.

Romulus performed very well with critics (with a current score of 81% on Rotten Tomatoes) and fans alike, who gave the Alien gore fest a 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a CinemaScore of “B+”.

Deadpool & Wolverine finished in second place at the weekend box office with $29 million, bringing their cumulative worldwide total up to $1.142 billion, only the second film to cross the billion dollar threshold this year (behind Inside Out 2’s 1.6 billion).

Check back next week to see if the aliens can continue to gobble up more cash, or if the two mutants take back the top spot at the weekend box office.
