‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Wins Weekend Box Office and Sets New Global Record

The Conjuring: Last Rites summoned not only a weekend box office win, but also the biggest global start of all time for a horror film.

The ninth entry in The Conjuring franchise (including the many spin-offs) banked a much better than projected $84 million in North America and $194 million worldwide in its first weekend of release, defeating previous global horror champ It, which made with $190 million in 2017.

The Conjuring: Last Rites also set a horror record at the international box office with a $110 million opening. The Michael Chaves film currently sits in third place all-time in initial domestic sales behind It ($123 million) and It Chapter Two ($91 million).

Warner Bros. also made box office history as the first studio to ever have seven consecutive films open above the $40 million mark.

The Conjuring: Last Rites, starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, was reportedly set to be the last in the franchise, but with numbers like this (and the set-up of the next generation of ghost hunters in the film), it would be a shock if the series ended on such a high note.
