‘Superman’ Holds Strong at Weekend Box Office

James Gunn’s Superman finished in first place at the weekend box office once again with a $57.3 million total.

The new film surpassed the last Superman film, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, which experienced a 68% drop from its first weekend’s haul back in 2013. Superman only dropped 54% (and also performed very well throughout last week) putting Gunn’s movie $24 million ahead with $235 million in domestic dollars.

The film has performed well overseas, adding another $172 million (with Mexico leading the way), but state-side interest and sales if certainly having a bigger impact on the new film’s success.

Superman and friends have a battle ahead of them this week with the debut of Fantastic Four on Thursday. While Kal-El will certainly take a back seat to Marvel’s First Family this upcoming weekend, it will be interesting to see how the two perform next to each other throughout August, when little suitable competition will be introduced into the battle.
