The new DC Studios brand is of to strong start under the stewardship of James Gunn, with his Superman film grossing $220 million worldwide and $125 million in the United States.
Superman has scored with fans and critics alike with a current score on Rotten Tomatoes of 83% (and a 93% audience score) and an A- from those polled exiting the theater by CinemaScore.
The man in the red cape faces some stiff competition in two weeks from Marvel’s new attempt at getting the Fantastic Four right on July 25, but Gunn’s film can continue to pack them in theaters and perhaps win the war with Marvel, which is seldom done based on the out of the gate positive word-of-mouth.
In other blockbuster news, Jurassic World: Rebirth still continues to attract dino fans with a second place finish to the tune of $40 million. With over $230 million stateside and $520 million globally, the new film has a shot to reach both $300 million domestically and over $600 worldwide, even in a competitive summer season.
Come back next week to see if the Man of Steel can continue to put distance between himself and Marvel’s First Family at the box office.
