Book One of the New X-Men Modern Era Epic Collection opens with Grant Morrison’s take on the band of mutants.
New X-Men: E is for Extinction collects 2001 and 2002’s New X-Men #114-126 and New X-Men Annual #2001.
Morrison and Frank Quitely team-up for most of the first set of stories, with additional art by Leinil Francis Yu, Ethan Van Sciver, Igor Kordey, Tom Derenick, Tim Townsend, Mark Morales, Dan Green, Gerry Alanguilan, Prentiss Rollins, Scott Hanna, Sandu Florea, Rich Perrotta, and Danny Miki.
Morrison introduced a number of memorable characters to X-Men pantheon including the twisted twin sister of Charles Xavier, Cassandra Nova, who wages a war on all mutantkind with a new group of Sentinels. Xorn, a second insectoid Angel, Beak, and telepathic quintuplets the Stepford Cuckoos also show up to assist and learn from the team, led by Cyclops, Marvel Girl, the Beast, and Emma Frost (who rises to prominence in Morrison’s run).
The team also donned the “love them or hate them” yellow and black X jacket uniforms during Morrison’s run (which eventually wrapped up in issue #154 in 2004).
Other threats include John Sublime and his organ-harvesting U-Men, Jean Gray’s out of control powers, and the Shi’ar Imperial Guard.
The New X-Men: E is for Extinction Epic Collection consists of 384 pages for a suggested retail price of $44.99.
