Jack Kirby and Walter Simonson’s Artwork Celebrated in ‘Bullpen Books: The Art of the Mighty Thor’

Dark Horse and Marvel Comics combine forces once again for another deluxe art book, this time focusing on Jack Kirby and Walter Simonson’s vintage Thor art.

Bullpen Books The Art of The Mighty Thor includes a collection of Thor covers and original art, reproduced from Marvel’s archival scans, caption commentary, a new essay that details the history and importance of both creators’ contributions to the character, and an all-new introduction by Simonson.

The over-sized hardcover art book (10″ x 14″) contains two complete stories from Kirby’s seminal run in Thor Annual #2 and Thor #134, and four complete stories from Simonson’s run in Thor #337 (the first appearance of Beta Ray Bill), Thor #338, Thor #339, and Thor #340.

“The brilliance of both artists’ landmark work on Thor is fully on display in this format,” said co-editor Chris Ryall. “And in addition to the gorgeous pencils and inks showcased in these Bullpen Books editions, the editorial notes throughout the book add historical insight and fun color commentary as further enhancement to the black-and-white artwork.”

Dark Horse’s Bullpen Books series started with The Art of the Amazing Spider-Man (by John Romita Sr.) and was followed by The Art of Fantastic Four (which also focused on Kirby’s art).

The Art of The Mighty Thor consists of 200 pages for a suggested retail price of $59.99.
