Welcome back to Conskipper’s New Comic Day Picks for the week of April 21, 2021!
There is a lot of variety at your local store this week with big name heroes and some new comics that you should check out that are not yet household names.
–Captain Marvel #28 (Marvel Comics): Kelly Thompson continues to forge new ground in her run on the title with the first issue in the next story arc “Toil & Trouble”. Is Carol about to become Sorceress Supreme of the Marvel Universe? Captain Marvel is now Captain Magic? We shall see, but regardless of what happens, expect another fine story by Thompson, as she continues to add layers to Mrs. Danvers. The brand new arc also includes new artist Jacopo Camagni’s stylings, which look to be perfectly suited for a magical tale.

–Nightwing #79 (DC Comics): As we told you last month, Nightwing is one of the biggest surprises of DC’s Infinite Frontier initiative, bringing Dick Grayson back to prominence in the DC Universe. As the saying goes “More money, more problem” and Dick has to figure out to manage his new fortune. Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo have created a set-up full of questions such as: Who is Mayor Zucco and what type of connection does she have to the man who murdered Dick’s parents? What is Nightwing’s first solo villain Blockbuster up to lately? Who might show up from Grayson’s past to help or hinder his progress in Bludhaven? These questions and more will certainly be answered in this fine new direction for the original Boy Wonder.

-Justice League #60 (DC Comics): Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez open their second issue with Superman, Batman, Green Arrow, Black Canary, Aquaman, Hawkgirl, and Black Adam teaming up to fight an new world conqueror known as Brutus (although it sure looks like Kal-El and Adam are not getting along so well on the cover). This issue also includes Bendis creation Naomi, Queen Hippolyta, and more.
The backup story featuring the new Justice League meeting with the new Justice League Dark by Ram V and Xermanico includes some demonic mischief from that rhyming rascal Etrigan, some hidden Zatanna secrets, and an appearance by Ragman. This showcase title is off to a good start!

-Cojacaru the Skinner #1 (Dark Horse Comics): Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Peter Bergting continue to expand on the “Outerverse” of Baltimore fame in Cojacaru the Skinner. The new title includes Eastern European witches, World War II action, ghosts, and of course, the mystery surrounding Cojacaru. Whether you have read any of the Baltimore issues or not, you will find classic Mignola and Golden ingredients here that you would find in any Outerverse or Mignolaverse story, so get ready for a spooky, action-packed good time.

-Moonshine #24 (Image Comics): Brian Azzarello and Eduardo Risso continue their gonzo Werewolf story this month with second chapter of “The Well”. If you have enjoyed this creative pairing in the past, you will find the same level of intrigue, violence, and spectacle…with the addition of a few furry, fanged critters. A perfect combination of 100 Bullets and The Howling. If you have missed the previous issues, be sure to track down the collected editions of this blood-soaked depression-era crime/werewolf saga.

That’s it for this week. Be sure to keep supporting your local comic shop in a safe fashion.
