Ben Affleck Joins Michael Keaton as Batman in ‘The Flash’

What’s better than Batman? According to The Flash director Andy Muschietti the answer is two Batmen!

Following June’s announcement that the original cinematic Batman, Michael Keaton, would appear in The Flash (starring Ezra Miller as the scarlet speedster) comes word from Vanity Fare that the most recent Batman, Ben Affleck, will also be joining the party.

Muschietti explained that Affleck’s version of the character (from the recent Batman V Superman and Justice League films) will be “… a very substantial part of the emotional impact of the movie. The interaction and relationship between Barry and Affleck’s Wayne will bring an emotional level that we haven’t seen before. It’s Barry’s movie, it’s Barry’s story, but their characters are more related than we think. They both lost their mothers to murder, and that’s one of the emotional vessels of the movie. That’s where the Affleck Batman kicks in.”

The reason for the presence of two Batmen in The Flash has to do with the nature of the film’s story, which is based on DC Comics Flashpoint series (by Geoff Johns and Andy Kubert), which ended the previous version of the DC Universe and paved the way for DC’s New 52 reboot in 2011.

It appears that the film will also follow this multivere concept, confirmed by Muschietti, who said that “This movie is a bit of a hinge in the sense that it presents a story that implies a unified universe where all the cinematic iterations that we’ve seen before are valid. It’s inclusive in the sense that it is saying all that you’ve seen exists, and everything that you will see exists, in the same unified multiverse.”

More information and details about the film will be made available on Saturday, August 22 at DC’s Fandome event with a virtual panel dedicated to The Flash.
