After the unfortunate passing of Appalachian Investigations of Mysterious Sightings team (AIMS) founder John “Trapper” Tice in December 2019, it appeared that there would be no further televised investigations by the surviving members of the team.
However, the AIMS team made the decision to carry on Trapper’s mission (including a exploration of the very first mystery that the late Tice uncovered) in a new season of Mountain Monsters, debuting on Sunday, January 10 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
The General Manager of Travel Channel Matthew Butler realized that “After the tragic loss of Trapper, we recognized the importance of finding a way to celebrate his life with our AIMS-obsessed fans and then continue his mission. What makes the new season so special is that the squad was eager to carry on Trapper’s legacy and head back to the forest, set on following his life’s work including intense hunts, thrilling twists and hillbilly hilarity.”
The new season brings back Jacob “Buck” Lowe, Joseph “Huckleberry” Lott, Jeff “Jeffroe” Headlee, Willy McQuillian, and of course, William “Wild Bill” Neff, for seven one-hour episodes and a two-hour season finale.
In the first episode of the Season five, the AIMS team (according to the official press release “…travels to the mountains of the Tygart Valley on a mission to prove that there are still wolves in West Virginia. A bounty put on them, and the last wolf was said to have been killed in 1900. The team encounters local farmers who tell of a dangerous predator that has been killing their livestock. The team soon believes that not only are there wolves in the Tygart Valley, but there is something much more mysterious and deadly.”
Other highlights this season include the investigation of gigantic K9 cryptids called Smoke Wolves, a meeting with Trapper’s daughter that adds clarity to the meaning behind Trapper’s mission, and a startling cliffhanger involving Huckleberry and a Bigfoot.
Along with the new season, last week’s Mountain Monsters: A Tribute to Trapper (as well as every episode of the previous four season) is available on discovery+ where the AIMS team reminisce about their favorite memories and moments involving the late founder of the famous group.
