Even though Thor’s name is on the marquee of his latest Epic Collection, you would be hard pressed to find the prince of Asgard in the Thor: The Lost Gods Epic Collection.
The “lost” collection comes from the era (1996-1997) when Thor departed from the scene, making way for his fellow Asgardians and Greek demi-gods to carry his weight. Thor: The Lost Gods collects Journey into Mystery #503-513 and -1 (by Tom Defalco, Mike Deodato Jr., and Sal Buscema), the Valkyrie One-Shot (by J.M. DeMatteis, Len Wein, Pablo Raimondi, Manny Clark, Joe Rubinstein and Al Milgrom), and Hercules and the Heart of Chaos mini-series #1-3 (by DeFalco, Ron Frenz, and Pat Olliffe).
With Thor gone (unless you count Red Norvell) and Asgard destroyed, the remaining gods are scattered across the globe, living an amnesiac’s existence. Sif, Balder, Ulik the Troll, the Warriors Three, the Enchantress and the other Lost Gods eventually come around just in time to oppose Seth, the Egyptian god of death’s plans to end the world.
The forgotten Hercules mini-series also finds the Lion of Olympus in rough shape, with no godly powers to speak of and Ares to contend with any way he can.
A similar collection was released in 2011 that contained all of the Journey into Mystery and Valkyrie comics, but left out Herc’s mini-series.
Thor: The Lost Gods Epic Collection consists of 400 pages for a suggested cover price of $44.99.
