The Flash is ‘The Fastest Man Dead’ in New DC Finest Collection

Barry Allen gets his first Bronze Age DC Finest Collection in the ominously-titled The Fastest Man Dead.

The Fastest Man Dead collects stories from The Flash #197-229, and Flash stories from The Brave and the Bold #99 (co-starring Batman) and World’s Finest #198-199 (featuring the third Flash/Superman race to save the Universe).

All stories are written by Mike Friedrich, Robert Kanigher, John Broome, Cary Bates, Gardner Fox, Len Wein, J. David Warner, Bob Haney, and Dennis O’Neil, with art by Gil Kane, Vince Colletta, Irv Novick, Murphy Anderson, Carmine Infantino, Joe Giella, Dick Giordano, Bernard Sachs, Frank McLaughlin, Tex Blaisdell, Bob Brown, Nick Cardy, Dick Dillin, and Joe Giella.

The Flash crosses the finish line of his 200th issue in 1970 and continues into the new decade with plenty of fleet-footed adventures. Highlights include Iris West’s mysterious true origin and battles against rogues like Abra Kadabra, Captain Boomerang, the Trickster, Mirror Master, the Turtle, and more.

As was typical of DC’s output at the dawn of the Bronze Age, some of the stories have a decidedly Silver Age flavor with stories revolving around the Flash’s attempt to assassinate the president and stopping a robotic John Wilkes Booth from attempting to kill the robotic Abraham Lincoln in the future.

Speaking of the Silver Age, some of the over-sized issues in the collection include flashback stories from Flash #116, 122, 137, 139, 146, and 155.

DC Finest: The Flash: The Fastest Man Dead consists of 672 pages for a suggested retail price of $39.99.
