Mad Cave Studios unearths Marvel Comics’ original The Last Starfighter comic book adaptation in a new trade paperback edition.
The three-part mini-series from 1984 by Bill Mantlo, Bret Blevins, Tony Salmons, Christie Scheele, and Rick Parker will be available in a new 80-page edition in June, spearheaded by the original screenwriter Jonathan Betuel and producer Paul Davidson.
Betuel said, “The Last Starfighter tale of a gamer-kid trapped in a backwater trailer park who saves the universe, the whales, and those he loves, mirrors the film’s creative journey. In this day and age of bigger, bigger, bigger special effects to save imperiled cinematic worlds in the final seconds of climactic endings—The Last Starfighter’s special sauce then—and in the upcoming expanded universe—will continue to lead the charge with ‘Heart Over Hardware’. The influence of The Last Starfighter has only grown with time, resonating across generations of creators and fans alike—its DNA visible in modern science-fiction storytelling that prioritizes emotional stakes over spectacle alone.”
Davidson added, “The Last Starfighter is a movie that thrilled me when I first saw it, inspired me on every subsequent viewing, and continues to be one of the most satisfying wish-fulfillment movies ever. When I had the opportunity to work with Jonathan on helping to bring new stories to audiences in the Starfighter universe, I was over the moon. It’s a dream to be involved in this iconic world in any small way.”
The Last Starfighter Movie Adaptation will be available at your local comic shop on June 23.
