Taika Waititi to Direct Film Adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s ‘The Incal’ Graphic Novel Series

Taika Waititi is known as an ambitious filmmaker, but he is about to have his hands full directing an adaptation Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius’s complex graphic novel series The Incal.

The Incal began in 1980, using much of the material from Jodorowsky’s failed efforts to film his own version of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

Waititi is looking forward to filming the complex dystopian tale and sees the lead character John Difool as similar to Jack Nicholson’s hard boiled detective Jake Gittes from Roman Polanski’s Chinatown.

“He doesn’t really know what he’s doing, he looks like an idiot because he’s got that big piece of gauze over his nose and stuff. He’s sort of bumbling his way through this thing and I just love the idea of someone who has no idea what he’s doing in his life, is then being charged with saving the universe.”

Check out the announcement video from publisher Humanoids below, and if you haven’t had a chance to read Jodorowsky’s epic, all volumes are currently available from Humanoids and at finer comic shops everywhere.
