The Superman: Brainiac Reborn Omnibus looks in on that time period right before the Triangle Era of Superman as the 1980s becomes the 1990s.
Brainiac Reborn collects Action Comics #647-658, Superman #38-48, The Adventures of Superman #461-471, Superman: Under a Yellow Sun one-shot, Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography one-shot, Superman Special 1992, L.E.G.I.O.N. ’90 Annual #1, and The Adventures of Superman Annual #2.
All stories are written by Roger Stern, Dan Jurgens, Jerry Ordway, William Messner-Loebs, John Francis Moore, Alan Grant, Walt Simonson, James D. Hudnall, Keith Giffen, Paul Chadwick, Lewis Shiner, and Bob Wayne.
Art is provided by Jurgens, Ordway, Simonson, Chadwick, Kerry Gammill, George Perez, Bob McLeod, Curt Swan, Eduardo Barreto, Jim Fern, Brett Breeding, Art Nichols, Art Thibert, Dennis Janke, Jeff Albrecht, Bart Sears, John Byrne, Dick Giordano, John Nyberg, and Jose Marzan, Jr.
With an introduction by Roger Stern, the foundation that predates the Triangle Era is clearly visible in the Omnibus, as the three monthly Superman titles begin to share multi-issue storylines such as “The Brainiac Trilogy”, “The Day of the Krypton Man”, “Dark Knight Over Metropolis”, “Soul Search”, and “The Sinbad Contract”. There are also a number of single issue stories from each title in the collection, published from 1989 to 1990.
The Omnibus also contains a few bonus from outside of the time window of the monthly books, primarily the Superman: Under a Yellow Sun one-shot (from 1994, most likely included as the “biographical” bookend to 1989’s Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography one-shot) and Walt Simonson’s Superman Special 1992 (which he both writes and illustrates).
The collection also includes the two-part Brainiac/Vril Dox crisis in L.E.G.I.O.N. ’90 Annual #1 and The Adventures of Superman Annual #2.
DC released the Superman: The Triangle Era Omnibus in 2024 which matches up perfectly with this volume.
