Mike Mignola and Bruce Zick explore a previously uncharted dimension of the Hellboy Universe in the four-issue mini-series Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time.
The introduction of Captain Henry is co-written by Mignola and Zick, with art by Zick, and letters from Clem Robins.
The story opens in 1880s England, where familiar Hellboy faces such as the Whittier family and Witchfinder Edward Grey are attempting to free the spirit of a Whittier uncle by piercing the veil between our world and the Beyond by sending Captain Henry into the breach.
“I have always loved building new worlds, whether as a concept artist for Disney and PIxar, or a creator of comics for Dark Horse,” says Bruce Zick. “And now, I get to design a crazy fantastic reality based on the fearless imagination of Mike Mignola and his Hellboy Universe. Mike is a pure genius storyteller and when he pitched this new story to me I felt that I would need to use everything I’ve learned over my entire career to make his idea come to life as something we’ve never seen before. When you follow Captain Henry and his newfound Time Traveler sidekick, you begin in Victorian England, then to a Ghost realm and finally to a retro/tekno/dimension that descends into a nightmare realm of monsters, ghosts, and a terrifying Time King. Not to mention a peppering of familiar faces from the pages of Hellboy–including Hellboy himself.”
“This is an idea that had been banging around in the back of my head for a very long time,” Says Mike Mignola. “I’m not at all a science fiction guy—unless, of course, it’s that kind of Victorian science fiction where guys tamper with forces they don’t understand and jump themselves into nowhere in a bubble-helmet diving suit made out of leather and heavy metal rivets. And, of course, you need a haunted polar bear.”
“Captain Henry is a soldier and fortune hunter in the grand tradition of heroic and mythic figures, and if you look closely you just might find him familiar in a surprising and unexpected way,” adds Zick. “One really fun part of building this world was exploring a new mythology for time traveling, from the origins of the science, to the fearless adventurers and their fabulous Time Machines.”
Captain Henry and the Graveyard of Time #1 will be available at your local comic shop on October 22.
