Much speculation has been swirling around Marvel’s recently released Heroes Reborn logo.
For those whose fandom stretches back to 1996, you may remember the first time the title was employed to indicate the return of the artists who left Marvel in the early 1990s to found Image Comics (including Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld) for a special “reworking” of classic Marvel characters. The results were at best mixed and few look back at the experiment as producing any work of note. So when a new logo arrived touting the phrase “Heroes Reborn”, some fans were naturally nervous.
Marvel’s trailer and artwork for the event seem to indicate a less radical concept with current Avengers team of writer Jason Aaron and writer Ed McGuinness producing a story this May that reimagines a number of classic heroes in a different light, due to the disappearance of the Avengers from existence.
According to the official press release, Aaron calls the new arc “Maybe the wildest story I’ve ever put on paper. I got to cut loose on this and release my inner comic-reared child in a really profound way, and together with a cadre of immensely imaginative artists, we built a world that I’m pretty confident in saying is quite unlike any version of the Marvel Universe you’ve seen before. It grew out of the pages of my Avengers run, but kept getting bigger and bigger as it went, and the more pieces I put in place for this Reborn world, the more gleeful and excited I became. This project really stoked the fires of my love for comics in all the right ways.”
The promo artwork also places Marvel’s version of the Justice League, The Squadron Supreme ( with the additional “of America added to the end of the team name), front and center, so we may get a look at what a JL-style team would look like in the Marvel Universe with their rivals now gone. It also appears that Blade the Vampire Hunter may hold the key to the Avengers return, as he is the only hero who can seem to remember the original team.
