James Wan Announces that ‘Aquaman 2’ Will Be More Serious than the First Film AT DC FanDome

Aquaman 2 is still at least two years away, but that didn’t stop director James Wan from confirming at DC FanDome that the 2022 sequel will be less lighthearted than the original.

Wan stated to the worldwide audience that “…the second one is a little bit more serious, a little bit more relevant in the world we are living in today. I think that’s where it wants to go.”

Patrick Wilson (Orm Marius) was also on hand for the panel, and told Wan that he’d like to see more underwater worlds in Aquaman 2, saying that “I know he loves world-building and I’d like to see some of that. I know you’re going to push that ocean. There’s a lot of unexplored ocean!”

Wan assured there will be new worlds and that Wilson should stay excited. Wan said, “I can definitely guarantee you new worlds in this next one and I think you’re going to be very excited as an actor with what you’re going to play with Orm.”

The always affable Wilson responded by guessing that Orm would be handcuffed through the entire film and offered Wan an escape plan, saying “It’s made of seaweed, right? I can just eat my way through it?”

Aquaman 2 is tentatively scheduled for a December 2022 release.
