‘Dune’ Repeats as Box Office Champ; Sequel Officially Announced for October 2023

Although its reign as the box office champ will be brief with Eternals opening next weekend, Dune was able to secure a back-to-back weekend victory with an estimated $15.5 million in its second week of release.

Based on the strength of Dune’s box office and streaming views on HBO Max (1.9 million views in the first weekend alone), Legendary and Warner Bros announced this week that the story of Paul Atreides will continue in October of 2023.

In less impressive news, both Last Night in Soho and Antlers failed to draw in horror fans, who instead opted to see the latest Halloween film, Halloween Kills (which finished in second place with an estimated $8.75 million). Edgar Wright’s latest, Soho, took in a little over $4.1 million, with the Guillermo del Toro produced (and long delayed) Antlers earning $4.2 million.

Next week should see many screens opened up for Eternals and the rest of the blockbuster heavy slate of films for November and December, so look for a consistent shake-up (and quick exits for underperforming films) over the rest of 2021.
