‘Doctor Strange’ Replaced by ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ in Top Spot at Weekend Box Office

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ended its run in first place at the domestic box office over the Memorial Day Weekend, with Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick earning a jet-fueled $124 million, leaving all other films in the dust.

Top Gun 2 (which is projected to hit $151 million after the Monday holiday) impressed both critics and fans alike with a 96% fresh rating and a 99% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare grade of A+ from CinemaScore. With a start like that, expect Maverick to rule the box office (at least until the dinosaurs return in Jurassic World: Dominion on June 10).

Doctor Strange 2 finished in second place with $16.4 million, bringing its four-week domestic box-office total to a healthy $375.5 million. With $497.9 million in ticket sales overseas, Strange’s current worldwide total now stands at a magical $873.4 million. With a few weeks left in its run, the latest Marvel blockbuster does have a chance to cross the elusive $400 million threshold in the United States, but increased competition may curtail the Sorcerer Supreme even further.

Stop back next week to see how Top Gun: Maverick fares in it its second week of release.
