‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Slays Competition and Sets New Opening Weekend Record for Anime Films

No demons could stand Tanjiro Kamado’s sword skills, including those demons in The Conjuring: Last Rites, and the rest of his box office competitors this weekend.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle eviscerated the box office, debuting to a record-setting $70 million for the biggest opening ever for an anime film.

Demon Slayer’s total more than doubled the $31 million previous record held by 1999’s Pokémon: The First Movie–Mewtwo Strikes Back.

Infinity Castle’s global total now sits at more than $340 million and is also the highest-grossing domestic debut of the year so far for any animated film.

Last week’s champ, The Conjuring: Last Rites, finished in second place with a 69% drop in ticket sales for $26.1 million and a $131 million domestic total so far.
