Comic pros used to say “Is this character “dead” or “Bucky Dead”?” in the Bullpen to confirm the eventual return of a deceased character or the unlikely actual death of a super hero.
That phrase worked for decades until Bucky Barnes was discovered alive as the Winter Soldier, making the ill-fated Captain Mar-Vell of Kree a candidate for the updating of the phrase.
The new Death of Captain Marvel Omnibus naturally chronicles the Kree warrior’s death in Jim Starlin’s seminal graphic novel from 1982, but the Omnibus also wraps up the cosmic hero’s publication journey in the Marvel Universe, focusing on plenty of the cult favorite’s life as well.
The Omnibus picks up directly where the first Omnibus left off, and includes Captain Marvel #34-62, Marvel Spotlight #1-4 and 8, The Avengers Annual #7, Marvel Two-in-One Annual #2, The Death of Captain Marvel Graphic Novel, and stories from Marvel Super Heroes #3, What If? #17, and What If? (second series) #14.
All stories are written by Jim Starlin, Steve Englehart, Al Milgrom, Scott Edelman, Doug Moench, Mike Friedrich, Chris Claremont, Gerry Conway, Bill Mantlo, Jim Shooter, Roger McKenzie, Marv Wolfman, Archie Goodwin, Mike Barr, Dick Riley, Peter B. Gillis, Diverse Hands, Steven Grant, Steve C. Ringgenberg, and Matt Jorgensen.
Art is provided by Starlin, Al Milgrom, Pat Broderick, Alfredo Alcala, Mike Zeck, George Tuska, Dave Cockrum, Steve Ditko, Frank Miller, Jerry Bingham, Carmine Infantino, Matt Jorgensen, Jack Abel, Alfredo Alcala, Alan Weiss, Klaus Janson, Al McWilliams, Bernie Wrightson, P. Craig Russell, Bob McLeod, Terry Austin, Frank Giacoia, Mike Esposito, Bob Wiacek, Joe Rubinstein, Bruce Patterson, Gene Day, Chic Stone, Pablo Marcos, Ian Akin, and Brian Garvey.
Mar-Vell travels from Earth to the Moon to the Watcher’s home world and into the Negative Zone and beyond in the stories, along with the consciousness of Rick Jones, made possible by their connection to Mar-Vell’s Nega-Bands.
Highlights in the collection include the aforementioned Death of Captain Marvel Graphic Novel (Marvel’s first), the culmination of the first Thanos epic, and battles against the Kree Supreme Intelligence, Ronan the Accuser, Nitro, the Living Laser, Annihilus, The Stranger, I.S.A.A.C., Drax the Destroyer, the Lunatic Legion, the Super Adaptoid, Mercurio, Phae-Dor, Stellarax, and even the Mighty Thor.
The Omnibus consists of 920 pages for a suggested retail price of $125.00.
