A Look Back at DC Comics ‘Christmas with the Super-Heroes’

Who wouldn’t want to celebrate Christmas with the Super Heroes!

DC Comics obviously thought so when they released a collection of previously released Christmas tales starring Superman, Batman, the Teen Titans, and Captain Marvel back in 1974 in their tabloid-LifeMagazine-sized Limited Collectors Edition.

The massive comic would have set you back (or your parents more likely) one whole dollar for five stories with a Christmas theme including:  “Silent Night, Deadly Night” by Denny O’Neil, Irv Novick and Dick Giordano (previously published in Batman #239), “Billy Batson’s X-Mas” by Otto Binder and Pete Costanza (Captain Marvel Adventures #69), “The $500,000 Doll Caper” starring the Angel and the Ape by John Albano, Bob Oksner, and Wally Wood (the only one previously unpublished in the collection),  “A Swingin’ Christmas Carol” by Bob Haney and Nick Cardy (Teen Titans #13), and last, but not least, “Christmastown, U.S.A” starring Superman by Alvin Schwartz and Win Mortimer (Action Comics #141).

The Limited Collectors’ Edition: Christmas with the Super-Heroes also contained a handy calendar for 1975 in the middle of the comic and cut out Super-Hero Christmas cards to share with your friends and family (and substantially damage any future ebay sales).

Across the street, Marvel Comics would publish their first Giant Superhero Holiday Grab-Bag Treasury Edition in 1974 as well, matching DC’s holiday and entrepreneurial spirit.
