If you ask any Marvel fan who grew up reading comics in the 1980s, Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s “The Dark Phoenix Saga” always makes their top five list of the best of the decade (if not the best of any decade in Marvel’s long publication history).
The “Dark Phoenix Saga” is also one of the most collected storylines of all time, and Marvel will release a new edition of the classic tale as a new jewel in their successful Epic Collection line in March.
This time around, the collection will include not only the entire “Dark Phoenix” run, but also the two part “Days of Future Past” story, the debut of Dazzler, a confrontation between Wolverine and Wendigo, and Kitty Pryde’s Christmas battle with a demon. The Marvel Epic Collection X-Men: The Fate of the Phoenix collects: Uncanny X-Men #129-143, Uncanny X-Men Annual #4, Marvel Treasury Edition #26-27, Phoenix: The Untold Story #1, and excerpts from Marvel Team-Up #100.
The Claremont/Byrne classic was last collected in 2012 as X-Men: Dark Phoenix Saga. 2012’s edition did contain Uncanny X-Men #129-138 and Phoenix: The Untold Story #1, but some of the other issues differed, with Classic X-Men #43, an except from Bizarre Adventures #27 , and What If? #27 selected over Uncanny X-Men #139-143, Uncanny X-Men Annual #4, Marvel Treasury Edition #26-27, and Marvel Team-Up #100.
