‘Wakanda Forever’ Holds Strong; ‘Strange World’ Crashes at Weekend Box Office

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continued to rule the box office with a $46 million third weekend and a $64 million Thanksgiving holiday frame (5 days) for an estimated domestic total of $367.6 million.

Wakanda Forever is currently 7% ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘ first 17 days of release, with a number of weekends left before Avatar: The Way of Water arrives on the scene to take the box office weekend title.

Not all the news was good for Disney however, as the expensive ($180 million) animated sci-fi film Strange World never got off the launching pad with a paltry $11.9 million opening weekend and an $18.6 million five day total.

Following in the tradition of Disney’s early 2000s animated features aimed at a tween boy audience, Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Strange World performed even worse in its first weekend ($12 million and $21 million respectively).

Even with no family fare in theaters until the latest Puss in Boots film arrives on December 21, look for Strange World to exit quicker than former Disney CEO Bob Chapek (who must bare some of the responsibility for this production being greenlit).

Comes back next week to see if Wakanda Forever can cross the $400 million threshold.
