Tyler Kirkham Discusses ‘The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham’

Clover Press continues their popular comic art books with one dedicated to Tyler Kirkham, appropriately titled The Marvel Art of Tyler Kirkham.

The new book (currently available to back on Kickstarter) chronicles Kirkham’s covers, sketches, and interior work, and we spoke to him about what it was like to assemble the new art book in the exclusive interview.

Thoughts on your first art book and how it came about?

Tyler Kirkham: Well this isn’t my first art book actually. I have done others on my own. I did a hardcover years ago. Probably over 10 years ago it was called Separation. Which featured a bunch of random stuff.

I’ve also done smaller sketch books in the past. However this is my first official Marvel book! So I’m really pumped and honored about that!

Was it difficult to select the pieces for the art book and were there any that surprised you or that you had forgotten about?

Kirkham: Not really. I had so much built up on my hard drives. In fact I have much more that we didn’t use. I just wanted a good variety of characters, interiors and covers. As well as rough sketches to pencils, inks and full colors.

You are well-known for your Marvel work on characters like Spider-Man and Venom, but is there a character in the collection that you are excited to show to fans who may be a little more obscure or that you really enjoy drawing?

Kirkham: As far as obscure characters no, but I do also love drawing the Hulk and have had the privilege of drawing him on a few covers. So some of that made it in the book! I’m not really known for drawing him but I love every time I get asked to!

You have done a lot of Star Wars covers.  Do you have a favorite?

Kirkham: Yes, anything with Boba Fett! Him and Mando are both fun characters to draw! The fans like them too so it helps!

What are your thoughts on the book heading to Kickstarter?  Any premiums that you will be offering as well?

Kirkham: Well Clover press has a great track record running successful Kickstarters so I knew that was the way to go! I was on board with it from the beginning! They know what they are doing! We are offering a handful of sketch remarks and I really love that we’re offering a puzzle!

Upcoming projects?

Kirkham: Yeah. I’m always working on covers. A lot of Marvel covers in the works at the moment and some for other publishers. I also have issue 5 of my creator owned book Final Boss releasing soon! Just wrapping it up now! The rest are available on my site tylerkirkhamart.com
