‘The Big Five Arrive’ in First DC Finest War Collection

The first DC Finest: War collection focuses on the five war comics that would define the genre for years to come.

DC Finest: The Big Five Arrive collects stories released in 1957 in Our Army at War #54-57, Our Fighting Forces #17-20, Blackhawk #108-111, All American Men of War #41-44, GI Combat #44-47, and Star Spangled War Stories #53-56.

All stories are written by Bob Haney, Bob Kanigher, Ed (France) Herron, Dave Wood, Bill Finger, Robert Bernstein, Robert Kanigher, Bill Finger, and John Reed, with art by Ross Andru, Jack Abel, Joe Kubert, Arthur Peddy, Dick Dillin, Russ Heath, Jerry Grandenetti, Mike Esposito, Robert Stuart, and Chuck Cuidera.

DC Comics quickly becomes the go-to destination for war stories (bolstered by the acquisition of the Quality Comics catalog by DC in 1956) with flying ace Blackhawk and the Blackhawk squadron leading the way.

DC’s perennial war hero Sgt. Rock does not appear in the collection, as the Sarge and Easy Company burst onto the scene in 1959’s Our Army at War #83.

DC Finest: The Big Five Arrive consists of 616 pages for a suggested retail price of $39.99.
