‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ Soars into First Place at Box Office

The Mandalorian and Grogu took home the Memorial Day weekend box office title with an estimated $82 million.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu is predicted to earn $102 million over the four-day weekend, but the $82 million traditional weekend total is the lowest of the Disney era, falling below 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Reviews for The Mandalorian and Grogu were solid, but not exceptional, with a current 62% Rotten Tomatoes score. As expected, the film did better with Star Wars fans and first weekend ticket buyers with an 89% Audience Score from RT and an A- from Cinemascore.

In other genre film news, Obsession finished in second place at the weekend box office with $22 million in its second weekend, representing an unprecedented 30% increase over its opening $16 million weekend. The low budget horror film has exceeded all expectations with a current $58.5 million domestic haul based on its sky high critical and audience scores (95% for both) and a young, engaging cast.

In less positive news, The Passenger crashed and burned in its first weekend with only $8.7 million in ticket sales and a decidedly mixed reception with critics and fans alike (44% and 53% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes and a B- Cinemascore). With Obsession taking all of the current horror dollars at the box office, The Passenger may soon by hitchhiking its way out of theaters soon.
