Really Awful Movies podcast hosts Christopher Lombardo and Jeff Kirschner memorialize some of their opinions on gonzo action films in their new book Mine’s Bigger Than Yours: The 100 Wackiest Action Movies.
Mine’s Bigger Than Yours contains selections from action stars such as Arnold Schwarzenegger, Steven Seagal, and Charles Bronson, as well as lower budget action heroes such as Reb Brown (who is featured on the cover), Brian Bosworth, and Michael Dudikoff. The book is arranged into nine colorful chapters such as Dystopian Hell, My Fist, Your Face, and Stupor Heroes, that allow the authors to showcase some of their favorites and some head-scratchers as well.
Each individual entry is full of irreverent commentary that the authors are known for, with a focus on the films themselves over the production and backstory. The entries are less “making of” and more “what to expect” in nature. Case in point: Chuck Norris’ The Octagon devolves into a debate on the plural form of ninja (is it ninja or ninjas?) in the best possible way. These types of diversions make Mine’s Bigger Than Yours a fun read, especially for those familiar with the source materials.

In terms of the selections, the majority of the films are pulled from the 80s and 90s with some from the 70s. VHS purists may balk at some of the more modern additions in the book, but with 100 profiles you won’t feel short changed.
Director Brian Trenchard-Smith ( of Stunt Rock fame) provides the introduction to the book, adding further street cred to the entire package.
So if you are willing to take a walk on the wild side of shlocky action flicks, Mines Bigger Than Yours is just what the doctor ordered.
