Glow Sticks Generate Most Calls to Poison Prevention Centers on Halloween

One good rule of thumb on Halloween (or any day for that matter): keep glowing plastic items out of your mouth!

Children biting glow sticks or glow jewelry generate the most calls to poison centers on Halloween.

On a typical day, poison centers around the country receive around 20 calls about glow product mishaps. On Halloween, that number jumps to around 260, according to America’s Poison Centers.

If the awful tasting liquid gets in your mouth, don’t worry, as it is not poisonous. You should however, rinse your mouth or your child’s mouth out after any biting incident.

Reports of glow liquid getting in trick-or-treaters eyes are also common, and while the liquid will burn, it also won’t cause blindness or eye injuries for the most part. If glow liquid does get into the eyes, rinse the eyes with running water for fifteen minutes.

Be sure to have a safe Halloween!
