Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows AHOY Comics series BABS is now available in a trade paperback collection.
The six-issue sword & sorcery series introduces Babs, a skilled barbarian/thief with a familiar looking metal wardrobe and the world’s worst enchanted sword (named Barry). Babs and Barry inhabit a fantasy universe filled with wizards, dragons, trolls, demons, and best of all, towering palaces and that contain loads of magical treasure. The pair are opposed by Tiberius Toledo, and his band of very white knights, who are anxious to exploit a local town’s citizens.
Ennis’ idea for the series originated when he looked back at some of the previous sword and sorcery series he worked on and enjoyed.
“I’d really enjoyed writing Hawk the Slayer for Rebellion, and found myself thinking about the genre and some of the possibilities it threw up. I’m not averse to sword & sorcery generally- although I read and watch very little of it, I do have a few favorites such as The Hobbit, the aforementioned Hawk, and the 2000AD strip Slaine, which I absolutely loved when I read it as a kid” Ennis said.
Burrows saw the series as a challenge, as “Aside from my brief stint into Sci-Fi with Marvel’s Warhammer 40k book from a few years back, I have drawn primarily contemporary real world and recent historical settings. I was excited to stretch my wings a bit and draw something visually different. It is always fun to get to draw monsters, armor, ruins, medieval weaponry and the like. The only downside is having to learn how to draw a convincing horse! These things are a pain in the ass but I do like a challenge.”
The BABS trade paperback collection consists of 160 pages for a suggested retail price of $18.99.
