‘Elseworlds: Batman’ Vol. 1 Collects Dark Knight’s Reimagined Adventures

The first of three Elseworlds: Batman collections arrive once again, with a plethora of reimagined origins, settings, and unique takes on the Dark Knight detective.

Elseworlds: Batman Vol.1 (originally released in 2016) collects the first official DC Elseworlds comic, 1991’s Batman: Holy Terror by Alan Brennert and Norm Breyfogle, as well as Batman: Dark Allegiances by Howard Chaykin, Batman: Dark Joker-The Wild by Doug Moench, Kelley Jones, and John Beatty, Batman: In Darkest Knight by Mike W. Barr and Jerry Bingham, Robin 3000 #1-2 by Byron Preiss and P. Craig Russell, Batman The Blue, the Grey, and the Bat by Elliot S. Maggin, Alan Weiss, and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, Batman Houdini by Howard Chaykin, John Francis Moore, and Mark Chiarello, and Batman Castle of the Bat by Jack C. Harris and Bo Hampton.

The one-shots (other than Robin 3000) imagine the Batman as a religious crusader, nazi smasher, magician, Union soldier, monster, escape artist, mad scientist, and a Green Lantern.

Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola’s Gotham by Gaslight (from 1989) is not included in the collection, as it did not originally carry the Elseworlds symbol on the cover (although subsequent reprints did). Gotham by Gaslight was recently rereleased as a facsimile edition and in a trade paperback in 2023 (which also included the sequel, Batman: Master of the Future, a story from Countdown: Search for Ray Palmer: Wildstorm, and Convergence: SHAZAM #1-2).

Softcover, 536 pages, full color. Cover price $34.99.
