Dark Horse Comics ‘Masters of the Universe: Revelation’ Will Serve as a Prequel to Netflix Series

Before the Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series debuts on Netflix, comic fans will be able to experience the “Power of Grayskull!” a bit earlier in a prequel series from Dark Horse Comics and Mattel on July 7.

The four issue Dark Horse mini-series was conceived by executive producers Kevin Smith and Rob David, as well as show writer Tim Sheridan. Sheridan will also write the new series and is joined by artist Mindy Lee on Masters of the Universe title.

David sees the comic tie-in as a return to the roots of the original toyline, saying that “When the Masters of the Universe franchise first launched nearly 40 years ago, each action figure came with a comic book to enable children to further explore the world of Eternia.”

The story begins for He-Man after “…a vicious Orlax attack on his father King Randor, He-Man learns the creature is linked to the origin of the sword of power. To save Randor and put an end to the chaos, He-Man embarks on an epic journey that pits him against his longtime foes Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, and sees Teela take the reins of a powerful legacy.”

Stjepan Sejic provides the cover art for issue one and Dave Wilkins will illustrate all subsequent issues in the series. The debut issue will also be available with a variant cover by Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart, and additional variant covers are on the way from Bill Sienkiewicz, Walt Simonson with Laura Martin, and more.
