Clayface broke the recent “villain movie curse” and won the weekend box office with strong critical and fan reviews.
The James Watkins’ directed Clayface earned an estimated $24 million domestically and another $19 million overseas for a global tally of $43 million.
The “modestly budgeted” Clayface (at $44 million) surprised many with an A- CinemaScore, a current score of 75% on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 94% Popcorn Meter result.
The fact that Clayface only includes a few Batman references, and is primarily a David Cronenberg-style body horror film, makes the result even more impressive for the James Gunn-led DC Studios movie.
With little competition over the next few weeks, Clayface should be able to add to its box office total, attracting those impressed by the positive review and fan reaction metrics.
