James Cameron’s Avatar continued to add to its all-time, worldwide box office total, and more importantly proved that movie goers still care about the long-gestating franchise.
The re-release of Cameron’s 2009 film earned $10 million at the weekend box office (enough for third place overall from only 1,860 theaters), establishing itself as the the most profitable re-release so far this year. Most of the business for the re-release of Avatar came from the Real 3D format that made the film famous, with 93% of audiences seeing it in Real 3D (according to Box Office Mojo).
Avatar made even more overseas this weekend, with another $20.5 million added to the film’s global cume (which now sits at $2.879 billion).
With Cameron’s long-delayed Avatar: Way of Water due in theaters on December 16, it appears that fans still have a hankering for the blue aliens of Pandora, boding well for the box office success of the new film.
